《Birdhouse – New House / 새집 – 새 집》 is a project based on field observations conducted in Berlin and Cheongju, exploring the meaning of vacant residential environments within the context of urban transformation. Taking as a starting point the remaining landscapes and traces found in rapidly changing cities, the Grru Collective imagines possible futures that exist between disappearance and emergence.
The title of the exhibition originates from a redevelopment area in Cheongju, where birds had made nests among randomly piled branches in the yard of an abandoned house, once inhabited by people. This scene evokes the dual meaning of the Korean homonym saejip — both “birdhouse” and “new house.” Through this linguistic layering, Grru Collective connects and expands the meanings of nature and humanity, city and ecology, cycles and reconstruction, settlement and migration.
This imagery also resonates with the complex realities revealed in urban redevelopment processes: people who are granted new homes, others who are forced to leave, and birds that take over spaces vacated by humans — and perhaps, the next place they too will one day have to seek. Saejip thus raises questions about the conditions of existence that go beyond physical habitation.
The video work Birdhouse – New House is based on observations of abandoned buildings and redevelopment zones in and around the exhibition site. These urban voids, scattered across the city and often appearing empty or desolate, are in fact sites of ongoing transformation. Destruction and reconstruction, memories and traces of neglect, spontaneous vegetation and nature’s encroachment, the imposition of control and the formation of boundaries, temporary occupations and the emergence of unintended communities — all these elements interweave to create new layers in the urban fabric.
Through these cityscapes, the video explores how transitional spaces reflect the invisible connections and internal dynamics of our society. At the same time, it asks how we perceive physical space and attribute meaning to it.
What remains, what disappears — and what is quietly growing in between?

《Birdhouse – New House / 새집 – 새 집》은 베를린과 청주에서의 현장 관찰을 바탕으로 하며, 도시 변화 속에서 비어 있는 주거 환경의 의미를 탐구하는 작업이다. 빠르게 변화하는 도시에서 남아 있는 풍경과 흔적을 출발점으로 삼아 Grru Collective는 사라짐과 생성 사이에 놓인 가능성 있는 미래들을 상상한다.
전시 제목은 청주의 한 재개발 구역에서 비롯되었다. 새들은 거주자들이 떠난 빈 집의 마당에 무작위로 쌓인 가지를 둥지삼아 자리잡았다. 이 장면은 한국어 동음이의어 ‘새집 – 새 집’이 가진 두 가지 의미, 즉 ‘새의 집’과 ‘새로운 집’을 동시에 떠올리게 한다. 이러한 언어적 중첩를 통해 Grru Collective는 자연과 인간, 도시와 생태, 순환과 재건, 정착과 이동의 의미 영역을 연결하고 확장한다.
이러한 상징은 도시 재개발 과정에서 드러나는 다양한 현실과도 연결된다. 새로운 집을 얻게 되는 사람들, 떠나는 기존 주민들, 그리고 사람이 떠난 공간을 차지하는 새들—더 나아가 언젠가 그들이 찾아가야 할 다음 공간까지.‘새집 – 새 집’은 물리적 거주지를 넘어 존재 조건에 관한 질문을 던진다.
이 《Birdhouse – New House / 새집 – 새 집》영상 작업은 전시 장소 및 그 주변 지역에서 관찰한 폐건물과 재개발 구역을 바탕으로 구성된다. 도시 곳곳에 존재하는 이러한 공간들은 비어 있고 황량한 듯 보이나, 실제로는 끊임없는 변화가 일어나는 장소들이다. 파괴와 재건, 기억과 방치의 흔적, 식물의 자생과 자연의 침투, 통제와 경계의 형성, 임시적인 점유와 우연한 공동체의 발생 등—이 모든 요소가 서로 얽혀 도시 공간에 새로운 층위를 만든다.
이 도시 풍경들을 통해 영상은 변화의 문턱에 놓인 공간들이 우리 사회의 보이지 않는 연결고리와 내적 구조를 어떻게 반영하는지 탐색하며, 동시에 우리가 물리적 공간을 어떻게 인식하고 의미를 부여하는지 질문한다. 무엇이 남고, 무엇이 사라지며, 그 사이에서 무엇이 조용히 자라고 있는가?

《Birdhouse – New House / 새집 – 새 집》 ist ein Projekt, das auf Feldbeobachtungen in Berlin und Cheongju basiert und die Bedeutung leerstehender Wohnumgebungen im Kontext des städtischen Wandels untersucht. Ausgehend von den Landschaften und Spuren, die in der sich rasch verändernden urbanen Umgebung noch vorhanden sind, stellt sich das Grru Collective mögliche Zukünfte vor, die zwischen dem Verschwinden und dem Entstehen liegen.
Der Titel der Ausstellung geht auf ein Sanierungsgebiet in Cheongju zurück. Vögel haben sich zwischen den wahllos aufgestapelten Ästen im Hof eines leerstehenden Hauses, das von seinen Bewohner*innen verlassen wurde, eingenistet. Die Szene verweist auf die doppelte Bedeutung des koreanischen Homophons „saejip“ - sowohl „Vogelhaus“ als auch „neues Haus“. Durch diese sprachliche Überschneidung verknüpft und erweitert Grru Collective die Bedeutungsfelder von Natur und Mensch, Stadt und Ökologie, Zyklus und Wiederaufbau, Siedlung und Migration.
Diese Symbolik verweist zugleich auf verschiedene Realitäten, die im Zuge städtischer Erneuerungsprozesse sichtbar werden: Menschen, die ein neues Zuhause erhalten, andere, die ihre Wohnungen verlassen, Vögel, die in die von Menschen verlassenen Räume einziehen – bis hin zu den nächsten Orten, die sie vielleicht eines Tages aufsuchen müssen. „saejip“ wirft damit Fragen nach den Bedingungen von Existenz auf, die über den physischen Wohnsitz hinausgehen.
Die Videoarbeit 《Birdhouse – New House / 새집 – 새 집》basiert auf Beobachtungen von verlassenen Gebäuden und Sanierungsgebieten um das Ausstellungsgelände. Diese Räume, die es überall in der Stadt gibt, wirken oft leer und trostlos, sind jedoch tatsächlich Orte ständiger Veränderung: Zerstörung und Aufbau, Erinnerungen und Spuren der Vernachlässigung,Vegetation und Naturinvasion, Kontrolle und das Entstehen von Grenzziehungen, temporäre Aneignungen und zufällig entstehende Gemeinschaften - all diese Elemente greifen ineinander und bilden neue Schichten im Stadtraum.
Anhand dieser urbanen Landschaften untersucht das Video, wie Räume im Übergang die unsichtbaren Verbindungen und inneren Abläufe unserer Gesellschaft widerspiegeln, und fragt zugleich, wie wir den physischen Raum wahrnehmen und ihm Bedeutung verleihen. Was bleibt, was verschwindet, und was wächst leise dazwischen?
